HealthTech Development for Bedbound Patients
The Tech
We were asked to achieve proof of concept for a system that would transport toilet waste from bed-bound patients – discreetly and hygienically.
This was with the aim of offering greater control and dignity to the elderly, injured or disabled in hospitals, care homes or their own homes.

Our Brief
To make sure the patient could manage the mechanism easily and discreetly, the design needed inbuilt controls.
And to keep the bed germ-free and comfortable, we would need hygienic materials with safe bacteria-eliminating solutions.
Our Approach
First, we asked patients what they wanted. Then we highlighted any limitations there might be for institutions or homes.
Liaising with the Institute of Life Sciences, we looked into clinical needs, finding detergents and cleansing agents, which wouldn’t irritate skin.
After scoping requirements, we researched the electronic parts, architecture, size, ergonomics and aesthetics. Taking into account the risk and safety issues, we talked to mattress manufacturers about how best to combine the product and bed.
Once complete, we developed a project business plan, outlining costs, after-sales requirements, revenue and savings forecasts.
We also created storyboards to demonstrate how the product could be used by the patient, medical staff and home carers.
The Results
The product successfully met the patients’ needs. We reduced costs thanks to specialist connections in academia. And we developed a product concept and prototype that fit the requirements of patients in hospital and non-hospital environments.
We secured intellectual property and have a patent on the product.
