A tacho distribution unit for Network Rail
The Tech
Network Rail controls and maintains the UK’s rail infrastructure using a series of Track Recording trains. Able to monitor track condition at high speeds, these are powered by a Tacho or Power Distribution Unit (PDU).
And when Network Rail’s old unit need updating, they came to us to design a new one.
Our Brief
The old system was complicated, and the new PDU needed extra functionality. It had to be more durable with less internal cabling than previous systems. And it needed to fit within a standard 19” rack system.
It also needed to meet stringent product lifetime requirements while complying with railway standards.
Our Approach
First off, we chose components that would improve the unit’s functionality and performance.
To reduce cabling, we used flexible ribbon cabling where possible.
And to guarantee the durability of the assembled product, we ran extensive vibration testing.
The Results
Our final PDU was a neat design that met all of the necessary criteria. And thanks to its ease of assembly, we reduced manufacturing costs for Network Rail.
