- The layer stackup to control impedances and the required power signals.
- The via technology (std, blind/buried or even stacked vias)
- Whether both sides of the PCB will have components or even embedded components.

- What type of signals are needed on the design, eg, USB, PCiE, DDr etc.

What is a multilayer PCB?
If you're still unsure exactly what a multilayer PCB is, traditionally a multilayer PCB is defined as having more than two layers. Whereas a double sided PCB only has two conductive (copper) layers, a multilayer PCB will have copper layers buried between the two copper layers of a double sided PCB. Each copper layer will be insulated from each other to ensure no shorts are created.
You'll usually find multilayer PCBs in:
- Healthcare equipment such as X-ray equipment, heart monitors and cat scan technology
- Electronics & communications like computers, file servers, GPS and mobile phones.
- Aerospace applications including space probe equipment, weather analysis and nuclear detection systems.
Multilayer PCBs have a higher assembly density and greater flexibility than single-layer PCBs. With the increasing miniaturisation of devices, we're seeing more client requests for HDI PCBs incorporating Package on Package (PoP), DDR3/4, SerDes and even embedded components.
