The Tech
Our client was creating a Power Control Module (PCM) for the Autosports industry. Replacing traditional relays and circuit breakers, the new PCM would need to provide diagnostic capabilities.
Packing a serious punch in power and performance, they came to us for expert advice.

Our Brief
Designed to fit near the engine inside a race car, the PCM had to be small, light and able to put up with extreme temperatures.
It would need to withstand high currents due to the performance levels required. And despite heavy-duty usage, the PCM had to be durable; meeting strict product lifetime requirements.
Our Approach
We started off by researching and selecting components that would meet the product’s weight, lifetime, temperature limits and current capabilities. This included finding materials that were both light and thermally conductive so the unit could cool down.
To make sure the assembled product was durable, it underwent rigorous tests for vibration, collisions etc.
And then we designed the PCM so it could efficiently process and monitor 16 analogue and 14 digital inputs, handling continuous high currents and dissipation of heat.
The Results
The resulting product was cost-effective, met design requirements and exceeded specifications for ambient conditions.
This included simplifying car wiring and reducing overall weight.
The first in an exciting range of products for our client, it won “Most Innovative New Motorsport Product” in Race Tech World’s Motorsport Symposium 2013.
